What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions.  It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Your Body

For your body to work well, its structure must also work well.  We work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible, without the use of drugs or surgery.  Techniques include touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.  We can also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

What Do We Treat?

At Irwin Osteopathy, we treat a variety of common conditions including joint & arthritic pain, acute & chronic back pain, repetitive strain injury, postural problems caused by driving or work strain and sports injuries, to name but a few conditions.

What To Expect

On your first visit, we will spend time taking a detailed medical history, including important information about your lifestyle and diet. We will normally ask you to undress to your underwear and perform a series of simple movements. This will allow a full diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your needs.

We will identify abnormalities within the human structure and function with our hands, facilitating the body's ability to heal itself through a variety of stretching, mobilising and manipulative techniques. With added exercises and health advice, we can reduce the symptoms and improve your health and quality of life.

We will always tell you what we are doing and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
